In a significant move to combat tuberculosis (TB) within the Gyel district, a delegation led by the Kaneng Rwang Pam Foundation, in partnership with KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation, made a courtesy visit to Da Dr. Nga Dangyang Jamang, the Da Gwom Rwei of Gyel Bukuru. The delegation comprised ward heads, council elders, the Berom Youth Chairman of Zere Gyel, the Present Secretary of Jos South Traditional Council, and the KRP FEMA Team.
The purpose of this visit was to shed light on the critical need for TB testing and its importance in safeguarding the health of the Gyel community. The Executive Director of Kaneng Rwang Pam Foundation emphasized that nearly half of the individuals affected by TB might be unaware of their condition, and an infected person could potentially spread the disease to 15 others. This underscores the urgent need for widespread testing to curtail the disease’s rapid proliferation.
In a groundbreaking announcement, the Executive Director revealed plans for a stakeholders forum to establish a Directly Observed Therapy, Short-course (DOTS) center in Gyel. This facility aims to equip the community with essential resources for TB testing and treatment, marking a pivotal step in the fight against this global health concern.
Dr. Kifasi Ephraim and Gift Lawrence further elaborated on TB, stressing the indispensable need for community members to undergo testing, irrespective of the presence of symptoms. They highlighted key points, including the crucial role of testing for asymptomatic individuals, the availability of free testing and treatment resources provided by USAID, and the guarantee of confidentiality to mitigate the stigma associated with TB. Early detection was emphasized as crucial in preventing further complications.
The initiative received commendation from the Berom Youth Leader, who appreciated the efforts of the KRP FEMA and KNCV teams. He suggested that timely notices in the future would ensure better mobilization and participation from the community.
The visit, which concluded at 10:37 AM, was marked by a constructive question-and-answer session, and a group photograph, symbolizing the community’s united front against TB.
This initiative not only aims at tackling TB in the Gyel community but also serves as a beacon of hope and a model for similar communities worldwide. Through collaborative efforts, we can make significant strides in the global fight against tuberculosis.
